Bulk Mail Distribution Guidelines

Do you have a direct mail piece you are sending out?

The USPS Folded Self Mailer regulations recently changed. Trish Witkowski of Foldfactory.com breaks down the rules in this video so you can get it right!

Size limits

All pieces must be rectangular or square in shape, weigh less than 16 ounces, and meet the following dimension requirements:

    Letters

  • Minimum: 3 1/2 x 5 inches.
  • Maximum: 6 1/8 x 11 1/2 inches, .25 inches thick.

   Folded Self-Mailers

  • Minimum: 3 1/2 x 5 inches 70# paper.
  • Maximum: 6 x 10 1/2 inches .25 inches thick.

   Flats

  • Minimum: 6 1/8 x 11 1/2 inches, .25 inches thick.
  • Maximum: 12 x 15 inches, .75 inches thick.

   First Class Postcards

  • Minimum: 3 1/2 x 5 inches, .007 inches thick.
  • Maximum: 4 1/4 x 6 inches.

   Nonprofit Postcards

  • Minimum: 3 1/2 x 5 .007 inches thick.
  • Maximum: 6 1/8 x 11 1/2 .25 inches thick.

Note: Nonprofit postcards over 4 1/4 x 6 must be .009 inches thick minimum.

Indicia

A bulk-mail indicia must be:

  • Printed on each mail piece.
  • Applied on the front side of each piece in the upper right-hand corner, facing right side up.

Pre-canceled stamp

When used, a pre-canceled stamp must be:

  • Applied on the front side of each piece in the upper right-hand corner, facing right side up.

ZIP codes

ZIP codes are required on every address. Mail pieces must be sorted in ascending ZIP code order.

Bar Codes

To receive the lowest postage rate, mailpieces are required to be bar coded. Part of our mail list processing is to generate bar codes on each piece.

Inserts

All inserts must be identical in size, weight, and texture including paper:

  • Color
  • Shape
  • Thickness

All inserts must identify the material as U of O-related and U of O-sponsored, and must bear a U of O address. Only U of O may benefit from the mailing.
